Pool Plan Compass · Spa & Hot Tub Installation cost guide
HomeAdvisor puts a new portable hot tub at about $6,000 installed on average, with a typical range of $2,000 to $11,000, and an in-ground hot tub at about $15,000. Install labor averages $2,300, wiring runs $600 to $2,200 and a crane $800 to $1,500 when needed. Swim spas cost more, at $15,000 to $40,000 per Fixr.
A hot tub budget has four parts: the unit or spa itself, the base it sits on, the electrical supply, and getting it into place. Each part can swing the total, and the base and wiring are where cutting corners causes the most expensive problems later. A tub that settles unevenly, or a circuit that trips every time the heater runs, costs more to fix than doing it right the first time.
This guide breaks those parts down by tier. The cost table and calculator on this page give per-item ranges; here the focus is on how they combine, what to prioritize and where to save. The spa installation page covers the technical side of pads and wiring. Read it before you get dealer quotes, since dealers vary in how much of the site work they include.

HomeAdvisor's 2026 average for a new hot tub is $6,000 installed, with entry, mid-range and premium tiers spread across its range. Entry-level tubs usually have simpler shells, fewer jets and thinner insulation. Mid-range tubs add better insulation, more seating options and stronger pumps. Premium tubs add advanced filtration, better covers and more durable cabinets.
The biggest long-term difference between tiers is often insulation and cover quality, which drive monthly electricity costs. A cheaper tub that costs more to heat every month can end up more expensive over its life. Compare energy use claims, cover thickness and warranty length alongside the sticker price. Most buyers are not adding to a pool: our analysis of EIA's 2024 household survey found 69.1% of hot-tub homes report no pool, so the tub carries its own heating bill. Ask each dealer for the tub's estimated monthly energy use in your climate.
HomeAdvisor puts in-ground hot tubs at $15,000 on average. A spa added to a new pool can cost less per feature because it shares equipment, which is why HomeAdvisor's spa add-on range of $2,000–$35,000 starts lower. Raised spas with tile, custom finishes and spillovers sit at the top. Heater size and controls also move the total.
Swim spas combine a long hot tub with a current generator for exercise. Fixr prices them at $15,000–$40,000. They need larger pads, bigger electrical supplies and often a crane, so installation costs rise with them. The in-ground versus portable comparison explains when each option makes sense. Measure the delivery path early, because a swim spa that cannot reach the yard without a crane can add a noticeable amount to the budget.

HomeAdvisor averages install labor at $2,300, with wiring at $600 to $2,200 and crane delivery at $800 to $1,500 when access is tight. The pad can be poured concrete, pavers on a compacted base or a reinforced deck. Each must be level and strong enough for a filled tub with people in it.
Wiring costs depend on the distance from the panel, the panel's capacity and local code. Jacuzzi, a hot tub manufacturer, itemizes the adders in its 2026 planning guide: about $100 to $300 for every additional 25 feet of wire, $500 to $1,200 for a subpanel and $200 to $600 for trenching. A crane is needed when the tub cannot be moved on a dolly through the side yard or over a fence. Ask the dealer to walk the delivery path before quoting.
The base is the other line that varies. The table in this section lists the four base options and prices from the same Jacuzzi guide. Whichever you choose, it must be level and carry the filled weight of the tub plus bathers.
| Base option | Installed cost (Jacuzzi 2026) | Construction |
|---|---|---|
| Prefabricated spa pad | $200 to $600 | Set over compacted gravel |
| Concrete slab | $600 to $2,000+ | Poured 4 in thick and reinforced |
| Brick or concrete pavers | $800 to $2,500+ | Laid on a compacted base |
| Wood or composite deck | $800 to $3,000+ | Reinforced framing under the tub |
Running costs include electricity, water, chemicals, filters and occasional repairs. The EIA found 52.7% of hot-tub homes heat with electricity. A well-insulated tub with a tight cover costs much less to run than an older or poorly insulated one, especially in cold climates. A tub used year-round costs more to run than one shut down for part of the year; the same survey found 30.0% of hot-tub homes use the tub all twelve months, so your expected months of use matter as much as the tub itself.
Jacuzzi estimates $20 to $40 a month in electricity for many well-insulated above-ground tubs in moderate climates, and the comparison table on the portable versus in-ground page cites HomeAdvisor's range. In-ground spas attached to pools share the pool's equipment, so their running costs depend on the pool heater and how often the spa is heated. Budget for cover replacement every several years, since a failing cover sharply increases heating costs.
Portable hot tubs are usually installed in a day once the pad and wiring are ready, so timeline costs are small. The main timing factors are pad curing, electrical scheduling, permits and delivery availability. Some dealers offer end-of-season or model-year discounts, which can reduce the unit price. Ordering early for a spring install can also avoid waiting weeks for a popular model.
In-ground spas follow the pool's construction schedule, so they are affected by the same permit and build timelines. Adding a spa during pool construction is usually cheaper than adding one later, since excavation, plumbing and equipment are already in place. The spa cost table shows typical prices for each component.

Choose a mid-range tub with good insulation rather than a premium tub with features you will rarely use. Place the tub close to the panel to reduce wiring costs, and choose a site with easy access to avoid a crane. A simple paver or concrete pad often costs less than a reinforced deck.
Do not save on the pad, the electrical work or the cover. A weak base can crack the shell or damage a deck, poor wiring is a safety risk, and a cheap cover raises operating costs every month. Use the calculator and the estimate request to compare options before buying.

Some dealers discount older models or offer promotions in slower seasons, and model-year changes can create deals. Demand patterns vary by region, so there is no universal best month. Shop across several dealers, compare the full installed price including delivery and wiring, and ask about floor models or previous-year units.
Cover replacement cost depends on size, thickness and material quality. A good cover matters because it holds heat, keeps debris out and serves as a safety barrier when locked. Budget for replacement every several years, especially if the cover becomes waterlogged or heavy, which reduces insulation.
Many jurisdictions require an electrical permit for the dedicated circuit, and some require a building permit for in-ground spas or decks. Permit fees vary widely. The spa cost table on this page includes a typical permit range. Ask the dealer or electrician who pulls the permit and whether it is included in their quote.
Often yes, if the slab is level, in good condition and thick enough to support a filled tub. An older or thin slab may crack under the load. Ask the dealer or a contractor to inspect the patio and confirm it meets the manufacturer's base requirements before delivery.
Swim spas are larger and heavier than standard hot tubs, so they need thicker pads, larger electrical supplies and often cranes for delivery. Some are partially sunk into the ground, which adds excavation and drainage. These factors can make installation a much larger share of the total cost than for a standard hot tub.
Some insurers raise premiums or require safety features for hot tubs, similar to pools. A locking cover is often expected. Tell your insurer before installing and ask whether your liability coverage is adequate. Today's Homeowner notes that pools add a modest amount to insurance, and hot tubs may be treated similarly.
Buying from a dealer who handles delivery, pad guidance and electrical coordination simplifies the process and warranty claims. Separate contractors can sometimes lower cost, but you must coordinate pad specifications, wiring and delivery timing. Ask who is responsible if the tub does not work after installation.
